Baking Snake

I saw this adorable "Snake Bread" recipe on Paula Deen and thought it way too cute not to try.
So, Friday eve, when I had some grands it was the perfect time to try it.
Ingredients are:
lunch meat, cheese, mustard, crescent roll dough, and egg, and a little dusting flour

Here are my big helpers, grand David and LauraJune in front;
Kobe, who I babysit, in back.
They are excited about the paintbrushes and the flour:)
{This is when LauraJune noticed I was taking pictures and quit smiling. She also took her ponytails down, so she has a cool hairthing going.}
I gathered the ingredients, and floured my island.
Oh, the fun they had painting with the flour. :)
Fun, fun, fun.

Then we spread out the crescent dough of two small cans, and patted all the triangles together to make one solid sheet.
I decided this needed to be done on a movable flat service to be able to move it if I needed AWAY from my helpers.
We painted on mustard.

(Notice Kobe's face??? Big mouth full of mustard:)
Next, we put a layer of lunch meat.
Next time I'll put more on.
Of course, we needed a taste test of the ham.
It passed inspection:)

Sprinkled some cheese.
(Another taste test:)

Roll it up, and paint with colored egg wash.

Then we popped it into the oven.
Make sure you turn on the oven light to really enjoy the view of your Snake baking:)
(Kobe's mom came, so he had snake the next day for lunch)

Ta Da!!!

Look how intense they are!!!
So excited about the carving of the snake...

Actually they were more excited about the grapes we had with the snake!
Snake eggs maybe???

They even folded their little arms to hurry up the prayer:)
Darling...

We put grapes on for the eyes.
Because it was crescent bread it was really rich.
Next time I'm going to try a pizza dough, more lunch meat and not so much mustard.
I'm thinking this could also be done in a cinnamon roll way for a sweet snake.
Hubby said it looked more like a worm.
Either way, mmmmmmmmmmm, delish!!!

Ingredients

  • 1 can crescent rolls
  • Flour, for dusting
  • 4 tablespoons spicy mustard
  • 10 ounces thinly sliced ham
  • 10 ounces thinly sliced salami
  • 10 ounces bologna
  • 12 ounces Monterey Jack, grated
  • Liquid food coloring
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 2 whole cloves
  • Toothpicks
  • 2 small pimiento-stuffed olives
  • 1 (1-inch) strips jarred roasted red peppers

Directions

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.

Line a cookie sheet with foil. Grease the foil and set aside.

Dust a flat surface lightly with flour. Spread out the crescent dough — do not separate. Pinch together the seams so that you have 1 piece of dough. Roll out to make a large rectangle. Make sure the dough is not stuck to the surface at all.

Brush the dough with the mustard, leaving a 1-inch border. Layer the meats down the center of the rectangle, leaving a 1-inch border on either end. You can feel free to use your favorite cold cuts.

Top the meats with the cheese. Fold 1 side of the dough over the filling, lengthwise. Then, fold the other 1/2 over and press the seal the filling inside. Take 1 egg yolk, and beat lightly with a fork. Brush the egg yolk over the top of the dough. The yolk will act as the glue to hold. Fold the dough in 1/2 again lengthwise. Pinch the seam with your fingers to seal. Press the outside of the dough to make sure everything is sealed tight and to make an even thickness for the body of your snake. Taper 1 end of the dough to form a tail shape. Form the other end into a head shape.

Beat the 2 remaining egg yolks together. Transfer to 3 separate small bowls. Add some food coloring to each bowl — whatever colors you like! Using a clean paintbrush, "paint" the snake with the egg yolk/food coloring mixture.

Transfer the snake to the foil lined sheet tray. Form into an "s" shape so it looks like the snake is slithering. Insert 2 cloves into the head to look like nostrils and 2 stuffed olives for eyes. Create a mouth or tongue with the roasted red peppers. Bake the snake for 25 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.

Christmas treasures: pt 4

What I enjoy, what makes me smile?
FROGS! (and purple)
So when I saw purple garland, I knew it would go great with my singing Santa frog, and bell ringing Santa: (no, its not realistic, neither is a singing Santa frog, or SANTA for that matter:)

My mom gave me a frog each Christmas, so I wired them to a wreath where I can really enjoy them (see the mistle-toad, and frog angels?), little girl doll is from a dear cousin (love dollies too), Mr. and Mrs. Claus from an Uncle (poor Santa has lost his eye)

Christmas treasures: pt 1

I decided to do four photos of my treasures (at a time) for the Christmas season:
One year I realized I had very little "Christ" on my CHRISTmas tree.
So, I decided each year I would add a new Christ ornament.
This carved gourd opens to a BEAUTIFUL Peru colored, paper mache'd? people, with a straw roof nativity. Its says its made in Peru, I hope it really is (from Ebay).

The red and white ornament is very old and fragile, I love the lights shining on the red background (from Ebay). The ornament on the right (Silent Night) is a Hallmark ornament from last year, it is printed on both sides.

My mom had this style of ornaments when I was growing up.
Wonderful EBAY made it possible to replace hers and obtain this retro nativity.

Left is a heavy new one from our Panhandle, TX girl trip this year, the plastic on is from a 2003 girl trip (we always stop at Hobby Lobby and Walmart), the wood nativity is made from Holy Land olive tree and a gift from my mom.

Soaring Spirit (Kite FHE)

We actually had family home evening (family night)
I used to be so good about this, but I have starting slacking.
(tonight we deck out the tree:)
I found this poem in the New Era (church mag for teens)

Erin Camp Worland,
“My Kite,”
NewEra, Oct 2008, 49
I went outside to fly my kite
One breezy day in spring.
I wondered just how high it would go,
So let out all the string.
With the end held firmly in my grasp,
My thoughts began to flow:
Oh, how much higher could it fly
If I’d just let it go?
With that, my hand released the string,
And much to my surprise,
It fell straight down
Instead of soaring through the skies.
What went wrong, I asked myself,
This made no sense at all.
I tried and tried again, but each time
All it did was fall.
So, one last time I ran
To let the breeze lift up the kite.
I let the string out to the end
But this time held on tight.
I smiled as I gazed upon
Those colors way up high.
I realized that, like my kite,
We too need string to fly.
Our string is called the gospel,
And its purpose now is sure.
Temptation’s wind may tug and pull,
But our string can help us soar.
I’ll hold on tight to what I know,
And like my kite I’ll be.
The gospel doesn’t hold us back,
Instead it makes us free!
I decided we would make kites to hang up.
My boys (20 & 18) are awesome craft-ers.
I just gave them some card stock, and they came up with the rest.

The question was, if I am the one holding the string, and the string is the gospel, what are the kite and the tail?

They decided the kite is our spirit, and it soars when you hang on to the gospel, and the tail is obedience.

Cool huh?
I'm happy when I'm obedient.
I'm happy when I don't have to 'regret'.
AND I love to see my children walk in the light:)
I'm blue today, so I'll just hang on to what I know, and be obedient, and let the tangles unravel themselves:)
Happy Monday to you!

If Your Happy and You Know It...

If your happy and you know it clap your hands...

"Happiness is not about having what you want, its about wanting what you have"

If your happy and you know it clap your hands...

"The pursuit of happiness is a most ridiculous phrase;
If you pursue happiness, you'll never find it."

If your happy and you know it...

"Don't let the sadness of your past, and the fear of the future, ruin the happiness of your present."

Then your face will surely show it...

"Today is better than yesterday!"

If your happy and you know it...

"The Happiest people don't have it all, they just make the best with what they've got!"

CLAP YOUR HANDS!

A free gift from above"

"Will you live or merely exist?"

"It isn't as bad as you sometimes think it is. It all works out. Don't worry. I say that to myself every morning. It will all work out....." ----Gordon B. Hinkley
(taken from Lisa Lou at Is that a garage door on my ceiling?)

You know the saying "if mama ain't happy, ain't NOBODY happy"? Well for the sake of peace in my home (where my people hang their hearts), mama is going to try, really try, to be happy, and make this place a safe, happy home!!! (send me some prayers? ;)

Me taking time to appreciate makes me happy, AND makes my house run better, AND helps others have a safe place to fall.

I love this first quote!
"Happiness is not about having what you want, its about wanting what you have"
I would love it written on my living room wall or down my hallway.
When I take time to enjoy what I have, my world is truly a MORE peaceful place!
