And I went out to see which rose was going to bloom first (also to touch their leaves and tell them how special they are), out of the corner of my eye, I saw a flash of RED.
My heart jumped!
I quickly went to see what it was!!!
Red Petunias! (the shadow makes them look variegated, but they are solid red:)
I planted this as a sad little dying plant last fall.
I've seen the petunias in bloom on the web, and the wild ones at my mom's.
But petunias don't do well for me (even though I keep trying them:)
While checking it out, and telling it how pretty it is, something jumped out, and landed in the tall grass.
Afraid it was a toad (and would be mowed over by the lawnmower) I checked and found a little bird.
It had all of its feathers, and preceded to jump away from me...
Over the edge of the boat, over the boat, into the flowerbed, under the water hose container.
Later I saw it's parent feeding it.
Since I don't have any cats outside right now, it may have a chance.
I don't know what kind it is (maybe a chickadee?), and I'm trying to leave it alone (however, I may have to go peek later:).
What could be more exciting than surprise red petunias?

Beautiful petunias.
I'm shocked that you've had trouble growing petunias, they are so easy, and so rewarding. Mine are old pass alongs, and they keep reseeding and bloom right through winter. Wish you were closer, I'd dig up a gallon or so of them for you!
Have you tried the "wave" varieties of petunias? They did wonders for me last year! They come in pink containers.

Pretty flowers! And if it's got a parent watching it, it's got a chance, at least.
Last year we had little wrens that kept falling out of their nest. I realized later they were in "flight training." I felt stupid that I kept poking them back up in there.

Red petunia? First one I've seen, and I love it! In November, I planted some very dark purple petunia bedding plants. They look like velvet. If I ever saw the red kind at the nursery, those would be my first choice!

Those are really pretty petunias, are you sure they aren't variegated? They sure look like it!

What a nice red surprise. Petunias don't do well for me either but I love them. My grandmother always had them planted in front of her house and every time I smell a Petunia I think of her. Seeing them doesn't remind me as much as the smell does. The last time I was there was over 50 years ago.
